I was researching castles in Germany and came across the Wernigerode castle, I liked it and thought why not share what I learned here.
I’ll definitely visit it the first chance I get, scroll and read more about, maybe you’ll like it too.
General Information about Wernigerode Castle
Wernigerode castle is a sight that can’t be missed.
Literally! it’s sitting on top of the town of Wernigerode in the Harz mountains of northern Germany in the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt.
It’s one of the most visited attractions in the state of Saxony-Anhalt.
Its history goes back to the 12th century and with that comes a rich history.
The castle is rich in details (both in its story and architectural style) & is a leading representative of North-German history.
Since 1999 The castle has served as a national cultural monument with an interior of almost 50 rooms, three gardens and park areas.(1)

Activities & Events to experience in this destination
When you travel to Wernigerode and reach the castle you have 2 options regarding the tour:
- Take a guided tour to learn about the castle’s history from a knowledgeable person.
- Tour the castle by yourself and take your time, but you’re on your own.
It is worth mentioning that no matter what you choose you’ll have to pay an entrance fee.
(special requests and tours in English or languages other than German are possible upon prior request & might cost extra)
When you visit the castle and finish touring it you can stop by the Café for coffee and a bite (Yes, there is one).
You can also visit the museum shop to buy souvenirs and learn more about the castle.
There are other tours offered through the year and special events that you can check by visiting the castle’s official calendar.
You can also walk around the beautiful old town of Wernigerode, if you are into historical places then you’re bound to like it.
Some events include activities for kids as well making it a family-friendly destination.

Brief History of Wernigerode Castle
Wernigerode castle is a magnificent medieval German castle. This breathtaking fortress was built around the 12th century.
It was originally intended to be used as a lodge for emperors while they were on hunting trips in the Harz mountains.
during its lifetime the castle changed a lot. Here’s a breakdown of some of the changes it experienced:
- It was first built in the beginning of the 12th century.
- In the 15th century it was enlarged and took the Gothic style.
- It had a change of identity to a Renaissance fortress in the 16th century during the Renaissance period.
- A significant change to a round Baroque-style castle in the 1700s.
- The last major reconstruction was in the late 1800s.
Through these years the castle witnessed a lot of counts, stories and events that you can learn more about when you visit the castle.
Location of Wernigerode Castle
The castle is located in the state of Saxony-Anhalt in what the German writer Hermann Löns described as “the colorful city on the Harz”.
